Puttur, Sep 9: Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police (SP), Dr S Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, revealed that a proposal to upgrade police outposts functioning in Farangipet, Dharmasthala and Nelyady into police stations, has been sent to the state government.

He was speaking at a meeting of religious and political leaders organized at the town police station here in view of the upcoming Ramzan and Ganesha Chatruthi festivals.

He also revealed that a sum of nine lac rupees has been sanctioned this year for repairing police residential quarters in the town, and that vacancies in the local police station would be filled, once the recently selected candidates complete their constable training. The SP added that a special meeting of the local citizens would be convened soon towards streamlining traffic system in the town. He felt that shifting of the office of the SP to the town would be a difficult proposition as other district level offices continue to function in Mangalore. He expressed the hope that the citizens of the district will celebrate the upcoming festivals in an atmosphere of unity and harmony, and explained about the home guards, Karnataka State Reserve Police and District armed reserve police contingents being pressed into service in the district to maintain law and order during this season.
