Udupi, Jul 14: A train passenger on July 10 lost jewellery worth Rs 6,76,000 while travelling from Mumbai to Udupi.
Tukarama Bhat (65), resident of Bantakal, Shirva, Udupi was travelling by train from Thane, Maharashtra to Udupi in the company of his wife and daughter. He had kept the jewellery of his wife and daughter in two bags in between clothes under the seat and started their journey at 10.45 pm. The family had occupied seat numbers 59, 61 and 62 of bogie number S-3.
Two men sat on the seat opposite Tukarama. As the train neared Kumta, a person next to his seat suggested the bag be kept up as rainwater was falling on it. Tukarama consented and asked him to keep the bag up. On asking where his companion was, the person said that he got down at Madgaon while he got down at Bhatkal station at about 12 pm on July 11.
Tukarama Bhat on suspicion checked the gold bags and found to his shock that the jewellery in them was missing. As the train moved, they continued their journey, went home, discussed the matter with people known to them and lodged a police complaint about the missing jewellery.
The missing jewellery weighed 169 gram and is worth Rs 6,76,000. A complaint under registration no 92/2021 under IPC sections 454, 457 and 380 is registered at Manipal police station in this connection.
