Madikeri, Jul 16: Kodagu district continues to receive heavy rainfall but the speed of the wind has come down. Rural belts of the district are going without power supply. Madikeri-Sampaje highway faces the risk of getting closed for traffic because of collapse of mud walls and crack of the highway at Madenadu. Many electric poles fell to the ground. The people are apprehensive of the climate turning more hostile.
Trees fell on two houses in Somwarpet, inflicting heavy losses. A part of the hillock near the office of the deputy commissioner in Madikeri is crashing. The road has become uneven near Madenadu on Madikeri-Samaje section of the highway. At this spot, mud wall supporting the road is giving way. When a JCB was used for repairing the road, it was seen that water mixed with sludge is flowing. Trees which flowed down Payasvini river at Koyinadu were cleared under the directions of the officials.
Areas like Talakaveri, Bhagamandala, Sampaje and Shantalli are getting good rainfall. Head of Akashvani Kendra, Madikeri, R Srinivasan, said that the Akashvani tower is not facing danger, reacting to the concerns expressed by the people at the collapse of mud wall near the base of the tower. Currently, protective wall is being built there.
The tahsildar has served notices to the people residing in Nelya Hudikeri, Bettadakadu, Baradi and surrounding areas because of the water level in the river rising. He has advised them to shift to safer places.
