Udupi, Jul 19: Additional deputy commissioner of the district, Sadashiva Prabhu, told the officials that slaughter of camels and cows during the Bakrid celebration is disallowed. He advised them to take strict legal measures if illegal and unauthorised cattle trafficking is observed.
Addressing a meeting of the district level committee formed to stop illegal transportation and slaughter of animals. He said that permission from the animal husbandry department is a must for the authorized transportation. He said that cattle can be transported only for dairying and agriculture purposes. If the transported animals are sick, they must necessarily possess doctor's certificate," he stated.
He said that unauthorised vehicles used for transporting cows should be identified and the cows should be handed over to cow shelters. "If they need treatment, the same should be provided. Water and fodder needed for the cows should be provided by revenue department," he explained. He said that if the cows are handed over to cow shelters after a case is registered, they can be taken by their owners once the court orders for the same. He reminded that maintenance expenses of the cows should be borne by the cattle owners. In the case of unauthorised slaughter houses, people engaged in the activities should be properly educated," he stated. He also mentioned that the maintenance expenses should be borne by the owners. He also wanted those engaged in cow slaughter should be summoned to the statement, educated, and a bond should be got executed from them.
"Tahsildars should hold peace meetings without exception. Steps should be taken to see that Bakrid is celebrated in a cordial and peaceful atmosphere. If illegal cow transportation comes to the notice of the officials, the nearest police should be informed, he stated.
Prabhu also advised the officials to arrange for security measures at the prayer centres and erect barricades.
