Bengaluru, Jul 21: Even though the state has been witnessing downward trend in Covid 19 infections, the death rate has not been coming down as expected. We may recall that in the first wave, 1,500 to 2,000 infections were reported every day and daily deaths were between15 and 20. But now, everyday 45 to 50 people are dying of infection.
During the first wave, 9,000 to 10,000 cases were reported in September and October. The rate then plummeted to around 2000 by November. The daily deaths also came down to around 20. But in the second wave, deaths have remained high. The death rate now recorded is about 2.5 percent, which is quite high.
The daily Covid cases from a month haven't exceeded 5,000. But the death rate which was 2 percent on June 15, has remained almost at the same level. ''Director of Jayadeva Heart Institute, Dr C N Manjunath, analyses that many among the infected persons are getting treated for over a month and Victoria Hospital has over 30 patients who are under treatment for over a month. Out of such patients, 25 percent deaths happen, he explained.
