Bangalore, Sep 15: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) vice chancellor Dr Ramananda Shetty has suggested students to come with proposals on new programmes that the varsity could launch for their benefit.

Speaking at the inauguration of Rotary Marathon 2010, a two-day workshop on endodontics organized by Bangalore Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital here on Tuesday September 14 Dr Shetty, said the RGUHS offers highest number of courses (sixty) of which five pertain to dentistry. Himself a dentist, he called upon dental students put fourth sound and comprehensive proposals on introduction of relevant fellowship programmes by the health university.

He said that the education in the present day competitive world doesn’t end with securing degrees and suggested the students to upgrade their skills and knowledge regularly.

Terming Rotary as the bread and butter of dentists, he termed the workshop as a unique experiment with a blend of objectives – scientific, social and even political. The workshop, apart from exposing the participants to latest treatment methods, also sensitizes dentists on environmental conservation measures.

Lok Sabha member Jayapradha said states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar lag in educational initiatives and suggested RGUHS to conduct programmes of academic interest in such states. She said that technology had been evolving with the advent of more new diseases and that Indian medical professionals were competing with their global counterparts. She interpreted the theme of the workshop (marathon) as a
continuous race to keep ahead with emerging trends.

Founder of Bangalore Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital and patron of the workshop K Subbarao said rapid advancements in technology have been posing several legal, social and ethical challenges. One hundred saplings were planted in the Nimhans campus by the participants to express their solidarity with eco-conservation measures.

About 400 delegates from across the country are participating in the two-day seminar being held at Nimhans convention centre. Twenty manufacturers of medical equipment have put on display the latest inventions for dentists at the trade fair organized as part of the event. At least 30 different dental microscopes are on display under one roof.
