The police who conducted the inquiry suspected that the act was committed not by any outsider but by someone known to the family. A nearby CCTV had recorded images of two people escaping after robbing the chain.

Police have now arrested the son-in-law of the victim Vinay Kumar and his accomplice Mani.

Vinay Kumar was residing in a rented house at Krishnapura near Suratkal. It came to light during the interrogation by the police that the son-in-law allegedly committed the crime due to some family issues. Both the accused had barged into the house of Sumathi Acharya, gagged her, snatched her chain and escaped from the spot.

Police have confiscated the gold chain weighing 32 grams worth Rs 60,000 and the scooter that was used in the act by the accused. Both the arrested have been produced in the court.
