Puttur, Sep 16: Taluk panchayat member, Pulasya Rai, led a motley crowd of women protestors, who held a demonstration in front of the office of the assistant commissioner here, on Wednesday September 15. The women had come together to protest against what they termed as highhanded attitude of the local assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in arresting and torturing innocent youth in relation with an assault case that had occurred at Ankatadka near here.

Addressing the protestors, she warned that if the ASP and his team continue to harass the innocent people by barging into their houses and beating up the youth, a stronger form of protest would be organized against him and the policemen. “The policemen have failed to show any progress in the case of robbery that occurred two months ago in Paltadu village. At the same time, they have been showing undue enthusiasm and behaving inhumanly in a case of alleged assault on Samir, a youth,” she noted.

She said that several innocent women have gone missing after becoming victims of the so called Love Jehad, adding that the villagers grew suspicious after seeing that Samir was talking to a teacher in the middle of the road for long, and therefore, assaulted him. “The real culprits in the case have already been caught. Dissatisfied with this progress, the policemen continue to enter the houses of poor families, kick the innocent youngsters and drag them to the police stations. We will bring this to the notice of the home minister,” she said.

Local town municipal president, Kamala Anand, taluk panchayat president, Savitri Shivaram, and other leaders participated in the protest. A memorandum was later submitted to the assistant commissioner, urging him to intervene in the matter of harassment of the innocent people by the policemen and take action against police atrocities.
