Mangalore: ‘Congress Has Not Ignored Christians’ – Arun Coelho

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 17: Dakahina Kannada district Youth Congress president, Arun Coelho, accused a few individuals, who have never worked for building the party, of spreading rumours, trying to confuse people, and in the process, weaken the party. He felt that the rumour about the Congress party not giving importance to the Christian community is the handiwork of these people. He asserted that the party has always given this community a rightful place.

“Leaders of the Christian community have never been ignored by the party while giving membership of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). The members to the KPCC are chosen on the basis of the recommendations of the respective legislators and block Congress presidents. There may be a handful of instances where changes had to be made in the interests of the organizational equilibrium. The process of appointing nominated members to KPCC has not yet been undertaken. At the time of choosing block and district Congress presidents, the party leaders will be given equal importance to all casts, classes and religions,” he explained.

As examples, he pointed out that the party had given an opportunity to a Christian candidate to fight the assembly election from Mangalore South constituency, besides ceding the position of the district Youth Congress presidentship and presidentship of Ullal municipality to Christian candidates.

what they meant by "Leaders of christian community are ignored".Do they mean that priests should be given Assembly tickets?.What is the role of Christian leaders during the elections? have you noticed any christian leader or priest taking initiative (except few who now seen doing some work in 2009-2010)during elections. All the sadhu and hindu priests are permitted or allowed to attend the political rallies. Only the christian priests keep themselves away during election campaign.Do you expect a christian leader to keep moving around christian priest or always attend christian functions. The congress party may have soft corner for minorities but cannot indulge in activities which can only convince the community leaders or priests. The general public is watching us and the party cannot just communal but party should be secular .The christian leaders expect a lot from Congress but are not involved during party work and elections.I agree with mR.Arun Coelho,go a head,if not the christians, the party is with you.
