Olympics: Govt spent over 50 crore on men's hockey team in last 5 years

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IANS): The Indian men's hockey team that won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, beating Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match, has received a total funding of Rs 50 crore in the five years since 2016.

The team that finished eighth in Rio de Janeiro Olympics after losing to Belgium in the quarter-finals, has received Rs 50 crore as part of Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions' (ACTC) funding.

Besides this, the team received Rs 16.80 lakh under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), the Sports Authority of India informed on Thursday. Thus the total government contribution in their preparation for the last five years comes to Rs. 50,19,80,000 (Rs 50.2 crore).

The team, which was stuck at Sports Authority of India's (SAI) Bengaluru centre for the entire duration of the nationwide lockdown in 2020, has mostly trained at home last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant travel restrictions.

Besides the above mentioned funding, the team also received visa assistance for various international competitions and foreign training trips.

The services of the team's physiotherapist is funded by the government under TOPS.

During the last five years, the players also received an out-of-pocket allowance of Rs 50,000 per month for two months during the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta. They have also been paid an out of pocked allowance of Rs 50,000 per month from March 2021 till August 2021, SAI said.

The team's foreign exposure trips, national coaching camps, coaches and support staff's remuneration and training equipment is also provided under ACTC.

Why the need to highlight expenditure on Hockey, now that they have won an Olympic bronze? What about the crores spent on cricket every year? Amount spent on Hockey, which in fact happens to be our National Sport is negligible. I think Hockey deserves much much more. Kudos to our Hockey heros!

From 1928 to1980 India had won 8 Olympic gold medals in Hockey, wonder if the the collective expenditure was up to 50 lakhs for all those years... Players didn't even have proper footwear.

50crores. How much actually spent on players? 20%. 80% has gone into middlemen, corrupt politicians or even Khaki uniform. Shameless people. Money alloted for sports are also eaten up by these monsters. 50 Crore is like Insurance. If you go to hospital if you are not under insurance different rate. But the moment you go with Insurance prices are doubled or even 4 times. Same here. Hotels mark up room rates 4 times more than the normal rates, as players expenses are borne by the govt. So 4 times the price. Jai Hind.

Behathi Ganga Mei Apna Hath Bi Dowle. This govt doesn’t let go any opportunity for vote bank politics since india has won now a bronze medal in men’s hockey. We already have a govt funded sports academy of india and Hockey India so govt funding it is not a big achievement from the govt. Last time india lost in hockey so govt did not fund the academy or india won Olympic hockey gold 41 years ago so govt funded Hockey India only 41 years ago!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Amount 50Cr is too less compared what is being paid to few top cricket players. In fact the Govt should keep aisde 500 CR for such task of national pride. Ask the ministers to contribute their one months salary as a gift to hockey players. Also dont ignore the individual medal winners in track and field and indoor/outdoor games. They should not be forgotten after the olympics.

The moment complete 50cr reaches to the end board without any middleman or ministers hockey team will get the gold or become world champion again. Still the players are suffering with their day end needs. Need a change in reality not by talks and numbers.
