Nominations Invited for Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Sandesha Award

Mangalore, Sep 23: Through a press note, Fr Valerian Mendonca, director of Sandesha Foundation, has informed that the Dubai-based organization, Mangalore Konkans, has instituted a Sandesha Award in memory of the late Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus. The new award will be known as Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Sandesha Award. It will be given to a candidate who has presented stage shows and/or brought out audio/video cassettes/CDs of Konkani songs/hymns with original lyrics and music.



Sandesha, a foundation for culture and education, which was set up in 1991, has been promoting universal values, love and harmony. The specific thrust of the foundation has been the application of wisdom, values, insight and experience of all faiths to the issues of human dignity, human rights, environment issues and total development of individuals. Through its wings, ‘Sandesha Lalithakala Mahavidyalaya’ and Karnataka Kala Kendra’, Sandesha has been offering BA degree courses, apart from other part time and full time courses. It has been holding ‘Kalotsava’, annual festival of arts and communication skills. The ‘Sandesha’ annual awards, given to people who have excelled in different fields, have come to be regarded as prestigious awards, being given to the best in those fields.

Wilfy Rebimbus, who was born on April 2, 1942 in the city, completed his primary and high school education in Milagres High School, before joining as an apprentice in St Joseph’s Workshop. Since a very young age, his singing talents came to be evident. He composed songs since he was 14, and he authored his first play, ‘Poishanso Sounsar’ when he was 15.  Wilfy, who emerged as a trend-setter for Konkani drama and music, organized 248 Wilfy Nites, authored thousands of songs, brought out 40 albums, and devotional albums. His songs and programmes touched the hearts of millions and gave a new thrust to Konkani music. He won a number of awards, including ‘Konkan Kogul’. The initiative of Mangalore Konkans, in instituting an award in his memory, is a step towards immortalizing the memories of Wilfy, who breathed his last on March 9, 2010.

Sandesha Foundation has invited applications/nominations for the above annual award for Konkani music for the year 2011. The candidates, to be eligible for consideration for the award, should have presented stage shows/ and/or brought out audio/video cassettes/CDs of Konkani songs/hymns with original lyrics and music. They should have been continuing the legacy of the late Wilfy Rebimbus. They may submit their resume with documentary and audio/visual support, to reach them at the following address on or before October 31, 2010.

    I congratulate the mangalore konkans and sandesha for instituting these awards, It is very important to encourage young musicians who can continue the legacy of konkani music not only by awarding but also supporting their music by providing them opportunities to perform and patronizing their music I call upon all konkani associations to do this.
