India Bribed 72 Nations to Get Delhi CWG: Report

Melbourne, Sep 24 (PTI): India bribed 72 Commonwealth countries USD 100,000 each to get the hosting rights for the scandal-hit 19th edition of the Games which will start in Delhi from October 3-14, a media report claimed here on Thursday.

A report in the Daily Telegraph claimed that Delhi pipped Hamilton in the bid after offering huge sums of money to the 72 Commonwealth countries during the final presentation in Jamaica. The report also said that Australia received a kickback of USD 125,000 from India.

"Delhi sealed the right to host the Games when their delegates emerged at the final presentation in Jamaica and offered all 72 nations USD 100,000 (then about USD 140,000) each for athlete training schemes if they were the successful bidders," the newspaper reported. "The money, subsequently paid to all nations, was not significant to Australia because it had already decided to vote for India and the payment was not an exceptionally large one.

"But for small nations who have minimal interest in the Games, it clinched their vote and India went on to beat Canadian city Hamilton 46-22 in the final poll. Hamilton had offered the nations about USD 70,000 each," it said.

The newspaper also claimed that some countries' which had supported Hamilton's bid cried foul after India won the bid. "Hamilton's bid organisers, and many of the nations who voted for them, fired off angry protests about India buying votes and the bad blood generated between several feuding nations still exists," it said.

"The Commonwealth Games Association has decided to ban 11th-hour inducements as a consequence of the outrage over India's tactics." Australian Commonwealth Games Association president Sam Coffa also accepted that India offered money to get the Games.

"It (the payment) didn't make any difference to our decision but it is not a good thing," Coffa was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph. "We had a situation where Asia has had the Games only once (Malaysia in 1998) and it was worthwhile going again," he said.

Even though the Delhi Games organisers are battling against time to prepare the city for the mega-event, Coffa was hopeful about a successful CWG. He, however, came hard on the Commonwealth Games Federation for not taking up the matter, in regard to the city's preparedness, with the organisers earlier.

"I still think they can pull it off. If I have any regrets it is that the Commonwealth Games Federation did not act sooner. They were behind schedule quite a few months ago and it would have helped if they had gone to India to get things moving," Coffa said. Chairman of Hamilton bid Jagoda Pike also pounced on the opportunity and said the scenario would have been different if the Canadian city was awarded the hosting rights.

"I think you can safely say the kinds of issues they are experiencing wouldn't have happened if it were here," Pike said.

    Good comments by Mr.pbr, udupi/Auh.

Now the pseudo nationalists are commenting as if NDA would have differently but totally ignorant of the following facts:

-There is accusation that NDA bribed to get the CWG to be conducted in Delhi- Is it not a shame?
    - Organising Committee has BJP members and what is their contribution to success or fiasco in CWG preparation?
    - Delhi Municipal Corporation is governed by BJP. Whether they have done their work properly and in time?

I am not defending Congress and organising committee of CWP but would like to highlight that everybody is equally responsible for the chaos which has been created. Now instead of blaming each other they have to work together for the success of the games. Pride of India as stake. My advice to pseudo nationalists is to stop the blame game and work towards the success of the game.

    Dear Mr/Ms/Mrs?? vijay shetty gulwadi,

    Where is NDA????

NDA has withered away, the day it was clear that vajapayee will not run for the post of PM due to ill health.

To remind you, west always wants to see india as poor country and doesnot want us to progress. It is this pure stereotyping and some bad PR by CWG that has lead to the present humiliation.

Couple of unfinished toilets, one false ceiling tile(Not entire ceiling)falling has been given so much hype just to malign the image of our country. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

For your information it was Godhra riots in 2002 that has caused our heads bow in shame in the international community and has left irreparable scars in the hearts and minds of majority indians.

CWG has become a joke, Kalmadi and UPA govt are jokers. People are laughing at Indians, it's big shame for all of us.
I noticed in this column, MR. (MS.?, MRS.?) PBR from Udupi writes CWG is bid by the NDA govt. OK, I agree with u it is hard to organise the event. Congress should have asked the NDA to handle the CWG.

As I had mentioned earlier, all big events were involved with big frauds. That includes bribes, kickbacks, spot fixings and many newly invented methods of money swindling in millions of dollars.
There should be an 'International Right-To-Information' law for the citizens of the world, so that they will know about the under deals by the Govt agencies around the world. They should also have a 'Vishwa Lokayukta' to expose the hidden under deals around the world.
The know-all Western countries and majority of the mega Business Houses are prospering through under hand dealings, kickbacks, blood-money, drug-money, illegal arms deal money, blackmail of important Govt officials and assassination of the ruling ministers of the countries who are dealing with or opposing their dirty work etc… etc.

They paid US$100,000 each nation just to show how corrupt and how useless we were? That's even more shameful. It was duty of everyone involved in this project to put India on top destination by providing unmatched quality, service and to make event most memorable to draw tourism to the nation. On the contrary, we have players and champions now who are withdrawing from the games. How worse can it get? This has truly become a CON-MAN WEALTH game.

All parties involved in this have made all effort to fill their own pockets with providing substandard work, falling ceilings and bridges. What a shame. I doubt if India would be allowed to host any other future international event without being pricked with corruption. And we say British robbed the country? Well our "in-house" robbers are more notorious than the Brits whose bridges are still standing.

India's Bribe, scams, poor organization skills @ CWG has portayed negetive perception of our country and alos lead several athletes to withdraw from these games. Today even Canadian athletes have withdrawn. I heard bridges falling in Mangalore few months back but now one of the bridge leading to CWM stadium fallen and it has created major set back for our country - poor image, substandard construction, poor planning...how come we accept challenges when we can't deliver ??
