Mangaluru: NH on Shiradi Ghat stretch likely to open for traffic from Aug 17

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 16: As repair work of the section of the highway near Sakleshpur where landslide had hampered vehicular movement has been almost completed, the vehicles up to 20 tonnes are likely to be allowed to move on this road from Tuesday August 17. The order conveying this decision may be issued on Monday evening.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, speaking to media persons in the city on Sunday, said that the district administration is in touch with Hassan administration and he had spoken to his Hassan counterpart with regard to allowing heavy vehicle to move via Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75. He said that the order in this respect is likely to be issued on August 16.

From August 13 onwards, light vehicles have been allowed on Charmadi Ghat road. As heavy vehicles have not been permitted on Shiradi and Charmadi Ghat roads, the vehicles moving towards Bengaluru and Mangaluru are forced to take a detour now.

Most horrific experience I ever had.. Been driving for 20 odd years. Was forced to take a detour and move take the bisle ghat road which would bring me to Subramaya and then a hour plus drive to Mangalore. From Sakleshpura to Subramaya which I guess is 70 odd kms was pure nightmare. Had to drive at the speed of 20 - 30 plus Neverending fog along with heavy rain. No crash guards on either side of the road and no houses or street lights. Visiblity was max 2 meters. God... still gives me goosebumps when I think of that drive. Anyone planning to take this road in the night.. I have only one word for your "DON'T"

Shiradi and Charmadi ghat are never ending episodes! Learn from Switzerland, Italy and European countries...they built beautiful and everlasting roads on Alphs.... Our ghat roads are nothing compared to theirs. We are suffering from corruption issues on roads. Why not invite European road making companies and finish the matter once for ever. It may cost less compared to 10 years road maintenance!

I went and saw the work was in progress, there was no landslide that could stop vehicular movement,. Thiis was preplanned to execute works and will become the culture of this government to execute works in the name of landslide like they are using corona and lockdown to execute or block public view of shoddy work done

The statement from DC about allowing only light vehicles in Charmadi stretch is bullshit. Last week I travelled from Karkala to Bengaluru by road and saw Charmadi full of Heavy vehicles including heavy trucks with full load and busses plying this stretch, which was making the light vehicles movement real hard. Authorities are all giving wrong information and the check posts at Kottigehara and Charmadi, there are no one manning the check post except one guard who is always in a civil dress. No one cares for these check posts nor these check posts are any effective in curbing the law breakers.
