Ashraf Ghani's brother swears allegiance to Taliban

Kabul, Aug 22 (IANS): Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's brother Hashmat Ghani Ahmadzai has sworn allegiance to the Taliban.

Hashmat Ghani, who is also head of the Grand Council of Kuchi (nomads) in Afghanistan, did not have any official position during the eight-year tenure of Ashraf Ghani.

In a video clip aired from the ceremony in Kabul, it is seen that Hashmat Ghani is pledging allegiance to Khalil-ur-Rahman, a key member of the Taliban, Afghan media reported.

Earlier, Afghan government provincial governor and national police commanders had also promised to be cooperating with the Taliban as they grabbed control over Afghanistan.

The allegiance comes as the Taliban leadership is yet to fill the political vacuum but reiterates that speedy negotiations are ongoing in this regard.

Hashmat Ghani is the supreme head of his tribe. Similar to a Sheikh among Arabs. He firmly believes that every educated person and the members of the business community in Afghanistan must support Taliban, and rebuild Afghanistan. Many can see the new Taliban have broad-minded leaders - keen to include everyone. If Indian Government can't see it, it is a tragedy for India. Unfortunately, the pro-Government Indian media calls Taliban "terrorists". The international media does not use this term. Let the Afghans decide what is best for their country.

Parading opposition leaders with doubtful loyalties will not help in the long run. So many groups and sects in Afghanistan and we will have to wait and watch as the situation unfolds.
