Udupi, Sep 29: Parrot is an extraordinary bird and a sheer entertainer that interprets human voices easily if it's cared for in a household for long.

Here is such a winged-entertainer under the care of Peddu Devadiga, a resident of Hangarakatte near here. It is a much sought-after friend of the family members and also neighbours. Its sweet way of beckoning the people by names leaves them amused and also cheerful.

Peddu Devadiga, who lives by working in farmlands had brought this pet parrot a year ago and christened it Ramu. Now being in the family for this long, the bird calls each of Peddu's family members' by their names, whenever they return home from work or pass-by in front of its cage. Vani, Peddu's neigbour gets a warm welcome from the bird, which pronounces her name with clarity whenevr she visits.

While pep talks boost the spirits, the sharpness and imitation of human voices by Ramu indeed surprises the neighbours and visitors alike.

A charming enough story of the joy pets can bring one's life. What is not charming is that caging birds is an unnatural and cruel thing. The process of capturing birds for such purposes is horrendous during which nests are destroyed, young ones are separated from their mothers and many die without food and water in transit. The practice of caging birds merits discontinuation. There's more beauty in their flying free in their natural habitats.
