'Nothing will be sold off', Sitharaman counters Rahul on NMP

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): Rebutting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the National Monetisation Pipeline, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said that the government will not give away ownership of assets under the asset monetisation plan and they will be mandatorily handed back to the government.

Addressing the media in Mumbai on Wednesday, Sitharaman hit out at the opposition citing monetisation processes undertaken under by the Congress-led UPA government.

Citing the example of the New Delhi Railway Station, she took a barb on the Congress and said: "Who called the RFP (request for proposal) on it? Is it owned by 'Jijaji' now!"

"We are not selling off, there will be a strict handing back," she said.

A day after the government unveiled the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) worth Rs 6 lakh crore, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of bringing the process of selling the "crown jewel" assets built by his party in last 70 years.

He also contended that the Congress is not opposing the privatisation process but "the entire NMP is designed to create a monopoly".

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters along with former Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram, Gandhi had said: "The Prime Minister and the BJP said that the Congress had done nothing in last 70 years. There is a list here of all the assets that the Congress has helped build using the public money."

First the BJP should make the sale of electoral bonds transparent. After introducing transparency in the sale of electoral bonds then hold the sale of public assets to ensure that Modi's cronies are not the beneficiaries.

Is monetization of assets another word for firesale or bankruptcy trustee's liquidation? Likely the government coffers are empty to meet all the Covid 19 induced handouts with middlemen becoming croropathis.

Govt. must, at the earliest, sell off all businesses to the highest bidder in the most transparent and accountable manner. No "crony capitalism" should be allowed. State control and interference , licence raj, red-tapism, corruption, no rule of law, poor law and order, autocracy are all hallmarks of Socialism. Socialism leads to Communism leads to Fascism – F.A.Hayek (Road to Serfdom). The government has only 3 core functions in a civilised, democratic, republican society: protection of law-abiding citizens from the law breakers ( functions of police and judiciary); protection of the country from external threats (armed forces); creation of infrastructure for the common usage of all citizens where privatisation may have conflicting interests with the common usage and to run infrastructure that private interests may not find profitable to run for the common usage. India will have to choose whether it wants to go the way of Venezuela & Cuba or whether it wants to become like Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland. 25Airports which are developed all through past 70yrs already in the hands of Adani. By the way nobody is talking about his investment. It is coming from overseas trusts. Nobody knows as per Govt own claim, who are the owners. Bhakths say it is done for better management. This is like a person keeps his 10lakh life long saving in a deposits in a national bank and gets some interest for years. Now, bank comes back and tells him, from now on, your money is given to X company and they will be managing your deposits better and they could also give you better returns. But, if they don't, bank is not responsible. How does it sound?

Asset monetisation. Super terminology. Honey coated sword. Marvellous tool for painless amputation. How will ownership remain with the Government after asset sale. Has the meaning of the word 'sale' changed ? in accounting terms. he called it "MONETIZATION' of assets not selling of assets to fool his bhakts

SitaRama and NarModi will surely get a Moody's rating for India. The assets they and the congress have built were inherited from the British times - the CST, the Railways and the whole infrastructure. What have these two parties added post-1947? and with whose money?
