Udupi, Sep 30: Vasanti (65) and her younger sister, Janaki (63), used to live together in a room of a house belonging to Anant, their nephew, at Kukkikatte near here. Anant works as a rickshaw driver. Both Vasanti and Janaki were unmarried, worked as sweepers in banks, and after retirement, met their expenses out of a small pension they received.
Janaki, who suffered from acute arthritis since sometime, died on Monday out of natural causes. Vasanti, who had lived with her younger sister all her life, did not tell anyone about her younger sister’s death. On Wednesday, she had visited the market. On coming back, she was perhaps, overcome by emotion, and hence, jumped into a well. The family members summoned the services of the fire brigade, but Vasanti had breathed her last before they could come to her rescue.
The people, who went looking for the origin of foul odour coming from Vasanti’s room, found to their horror that Janaki had died two days back.
