Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 1: Speaking at the general session of the city corporation council held here on Thursday September 30, city mayor, Rajani Dugganna, assured the corporators that the work of filling potholes in the city roads would be undertaken in November this year.

Replying to questions raised by corporators, she said that the engineers have already been alerted about the need to take up the work on time. “They have been asked to prepare estimates and begin the works. The MLAs and district in-charge minister have stressed the need to use funds properly and repair the roads completely,” she explained. She said that every ward would be allotted with a grant of Rs 50 lac for the above work, out of the special grant of Rs 100 crore sanctioned to the city by the Chief Minister.

A core committee has been set up for ensuring that works are granted uniformly to all the wards, in view of complaints received from the opposition members that the city administration has been partial to ruling party corporators. Rajani said that a decision to form core committee had been taken in a meeting attended by the district in-charge minister, MLA and district deputy commissioner. She expressed readiness to cancel the proposal if the corporators feel that there is no need for the same. Corporators from the Congress party expressed resentment at the concept of core committee.

The mayor said that a meeting of the officials of the national highway department would be convened within two weeks to sort out the issue of delayed execution of highway widening road within the city limits.

Former mayor, Shashidhar Hegde, opposition leader, D K Ashok Kumar, Navin D’Souza, Mariamma Thomas, Harinath, former mayor, Shankar Bhat, James D’Souza, Tilakraj and others participated in discussions. The session was completed in about an hour in view of the situation prevailing in the city.

Once the pothole patch up work over, MCC Must have a dedicated helpline/Toll no. to be on the road side to call them incase again pothole appears to be filled in immediately. D.C. must make sure the contractor is doing the right job so that again potholes should not appear in the same place in near future. Otherwise what is the use ? every 6 months potholes appearing in the same place and road users are going thru all kinds of pain while driving. Let there be some transparency and accountability in the work done . Do not forget we are in Mangalore and not in BIHAR.

I think the mayor has to be very clear on November of which year will the pot holes be filled. Does this year represent 2010 or 2020? Just filling the pot holes is not enough. Care should be taken when the tar is laid to see that right amount of mixture is used and this would ensure that there are no pot holes at all.
