JEDDAH, Oct 2(Arab News): An Asian worker accused of beating a young disabled Saudi with a stick and breaking his foot at the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center in Jeddah is being investigated by the Department of Social Affairs and police.
According to a report issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the disabled man was found with a contused and swollen left foot. The report also included a hospital report which said that the man’s left foot was broken and in plaster. It quoted a medical doctor at the center saying that the injuries were most likely caused by a stick.
Col. Misfer Al-Juaid, spokesman for Jeddah police, confirmed that the incident was being investigated. He added that the Asian worker had been arrested and during questioning admitted he had unintentionally injured the young man while providing him physiotherapy. Al-Juaid said all officials and workers at the center would be questioned. The director of the Department of Social Affairs in the Makkah region was unavailable to comment on the incident. Saeed Al-Suhaimi, the brother of the victim, said the incident took place in the middle of September and that the center did not notify the family. “It was by chance that I discovered that my brother had been attacked and that his leg was broken. When I asked the director of the center, he told me that my brother was beaten up by an Asian worker,” he said. He added that the director said there are no physiotherapy facilities at the center and that his brother did not require such medication. He also said he has medical reports from King Fahd Hospital showing that his brother was beaten up and that his leg broke as a result.
Al-Suhaimi said he has also filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission. “My brother has difficulties speaking, he is mentally disabled and the attack has left him unable to move,” he said.
He added that his brother’s teeth were broken in a previous incident at the center, which claimed he fell after a carpet was pulled from beneath his feet.
