Mangaluru: Neglected monument Sultan Battery, cries for attention

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 4: Sultan Battery fort built during the British era, which is several centuries old and is identified by the archaeological department as a protected monument, is in a neglected state. The fort is important historically and has a good presence. The government is expected to take care of this fort.

After the lockdown rules were relaxed, the Sultan Battery fort located within the city has been opened for the visitors. Most of the people who come to Tannirbhavi beach visit the fort located at Boloor. There are no checks or verifications for the people who visit this monument. Rarely are any security personnel present, and people can go up the steps and enter the monument without any obstacles or hassles.

People have created graffiti using obscene language, and plastic bottles and bags are strewn around. Stone benches meant for seating have been broken and a small gate on the left side has been locked.

The fort has thick growth of grass and forest around it. Waste has accumulated in between the grass. An iron fencing has been built here but this is gathering rust now. As the weather is saline and humid, iron catches rust faster. The fence needs to be painted at regular intervals.

People visiting Sultan Battery have to turn left near Mannagudde bus stand and move via Urwa market road. The road from Urwa market to Sultan Battery is not in good shape. Thousands of vehicles use this road on a daily basis. Only haphazard patch work has been undertaken on this relatively narrow road. Several manholes jut over the road level here. During the rainy season, artificial floods are formed on this road. As huge trucks are parked at the entry point to the fort, the tourists face problems.

The archaeological department has planted a board about the monument having been a protected one. As per law those damaging, shifting, destroying and defacing or misusing the monument are punishable with two years’ imprisonment and one lac rupees fine. Strangely there are no security personnel to look out for the offenders.

Tipu Sultan had built this fort to watch for the arrival of the warships of the British. There is a facility underground which was used for storing the gunpowder. During the rule of kings, essential items and critical things were secretly stored here. Tragically the fort is now being used for liquor consumption and immoral activities. There is a need to post security men and keep the gate locked. At night, police patrolling has to be increased and the concerned should be watchful to ensure that illegal activities do not take place here.

MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath said that the government will draw up a plan to develop the fort. He said officials will be instructed suitably so that the matter is taken up with the archaeological department for the protection of the monument.

The originality of the monument has been ruined completely a few years ago when renovation work was undertaken. The people who were supposed to renovate the battery completely destroyed it by plastering it all around. Now it looks more like a municipality water tank than a cannon battery. One should learn from the maintenance of forts in Goa and Kerala, on how real renovation is done, and the original structure is preserved.

@ RSRB, Kundapura - I finished my studies in 1970 and since then whatever I studied remained only the books. Where there is patience to read history. I comment on some general knowledge and present events taking place in the world. Please spare for lack of historical knowledge. You are the who has mastered the subject and any time in the future I will refer to you before putting my comments in words.

Dear Sir, going through history makes us to feel we are brothers of same ancestors. If we are in different religions today, it is (99%) because of force. I can visualize the oppression your forefathers might have undergone during their conversion. And my forefathers hiding somewhere to avoid conversion. Finally both our forefathers suffered heavily due to intruded barbaric people. Hence, while seeing all Indians, the first thing comes in mind is "we are all blood relatives" and "our ancestors suffered because of outsiders". Nothing else comes to my mind. And of course, one more thing also comes... i.e., why my blood relatives are taking the side of intruders and oppressors?????

real kujuma, kodial..... Good that you have accepted your forefathers were illiterates (as you claim they have not came from "Brahma's chest". Then how come they have read the holy books that belong to the intruders and understood?. This itself confirms, the religion was forced upon them..... By the way, the great scholars of Hindus such as Vyasa, Vishwamitra, etc. were born to illiterate parents. But Hindus treat them as their Gurus. And it is possible only in Hinduism. .... Also, your argument shows you regret for the your ancestors decision, however trying to prove as "adi biddaroo moogu mele" because the "upper" and "lower" races do exists in all religion including yours... Even the children of same parent will have cold war to prove who is "up" and "low"

real kujuma, kodial... If the caste system was an issue, your forefathers would have easily taken up sects such as Lingayat, Buddhism or Jainism which were flourishing in Karnataka at that time.... The conversion to Islam and Christianity reminds me Tipu's and Portuguese massacre.... And my heart goes for your forefathers who were suffered and oppressed...

@ Mr. RSRB, you are right sir. Portuguese persecution and oppression are the reasons why both communities fled Goa and settled in Mangalore - Udupi region. Despite conversion the new converts were strictly forbidden to follow their age old social customs and traditions. They were treated as slaves. Inquisition further worsened the situation. Even today the customs and culture of Goan Catholics are different from those in Mangalore.

There is nothing to see, looks like one huge corporation water tank . The views are not that great or breath taking to make it to "must visit" list. Go to Aloysius church and see the paintings etc which are marvelous and is worth talking about . Ask anyone his experience who had been to Sultan battery ? and their response would be nothing great or worth to talk about . With the same money of improving the area, they can build a clinic or hospital to treat the needy .
