Bunts Hostel Circle Razed for Road Widening

Mangalore, Oct 6 (TNN): Bunts Hostel Circle - a city landmark with a history of nearly 100 years was razed down here on Tuesday. The Bunts alias Nadavara Mathr Sangha constructed the circle when the Sangha was set up a century ago. This circle was given a facelift two decades ago and remained one of the recognisable landmarks in the city. But its presence at a road junction was proving to be a severe impediment for movement of traffic.

Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi, president, Federation of World Bunts Association and former president of Bunts Sangha told TOI here on Tuesday that the circle had high sentimental value to the Bunts community. However, its presence at a vantage point, which has a high density of traffic, was proving to be a major bottleneck for free flow of traffic, Rai said adding that the Sangha agreed to a request from the authorities to remove the circle.

"We received requests from the deputy commissioner, commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation commissioner and even the police authorities to demolish the circle," Rai said adding that the Sangha voluntarily accepted their request. "We do not want sentiments to come in the way of development," he said adding that the Sangha has given up a part of its land at junction abutting the road towards Mallikatte to facilitate road widening there.

Rai said he had taken the onus on himself to construct a new circle at a short distance from the spot where the present circle was located on the road leading to Dr Ambedkar circle. The final design and other logistic of this new circle is being worked out, he said adding that the proposal would be placed before the Sangha for approval and final execution. The initial proposal was that the civic body would reconstruct the circle, he noted.

Contractors executing the road concreting work on the Bunts Hostel Circle - Mallikatte Road removed the traffic signal police erected adjacent to Pai Sales International showroom there later in the evening under the supervision of traffic police. The then DK district police had installed traffic signals at the Bunts Hostel Circle junction but was not in a position to make it operational until such time that the circle was removed.

Really a great gesture, all in the city must thank for the generosity shown by the bunts sangha & their leader Mr.Rai.There is similar problem Balmatta circle, which is stuck with a problem blocking the developments.Authorities of Mangalore town are really lenient on this particular issue compare to the other areas where they take some stringent action. Will the parties involved be kind enough to follow suit in co operating with the public needs??

This place does have a lot of sentiments. My great grandfather contributed to this set up back in the day. I think the decision to raze it to make way for the current traffic is excellent. I am willing to donate money if the Bunts Sangha of Manager is willing to take up the project to make it the best junction in Karnataka. Not in the spirit of the community alone but in the spirit of being a progressive mangalorean.
Bulsam, you have an excellent point. All those houses you mentioned that gave mangalore it's distinct character is gone. We should start spreading out instead of building inwards. Keep this area as it is and not license tall buildings. But the builders are hungry.

From my childhood whenever we walk around Old Shedigudda area, we come across Bunts Hostel Circle. Request the authorities at least keep this name at Bunts Hostel circle as BUNTS HOSTEL Signal when signals will be installed. We have great sentiments to this area and for the circle. This will upkeep everybody's sentiments and development will not be hindered.

We are paying these prices in the name of development. During British rule, Hampanakatta signal had a majestic lamppost and the handful buses plying in those days used to park them around this lamppost. Opposite Town Hall, we had a beautiful clock tower that had to go. St Aloysius had many playgrounds and they are no more there. Our sleepy town had many typical Mangalorean Bungalow type houses with front portico and now the builders take away to convert them into concrete jungles. The days are not far when the playgrounds and parks will be on top of the terraces.

Well done Mr. Rai, hope those people make, “make shift katte” will also change their mind and allow MCC to widen the roads. But same time MCC should not work in favor of builders. There is lot of pressure from builders to widen the road to get permission to build high rise residential apartments with in city. I think MCC should not allow this to maintain the culture builders can go out side the city limit to construct high rise apartments. I am sure many don’t like to make Mangalore as concrete jungle.
