Udupi: Unscientific bend on highway at Santhekatte needs urgent attention

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP/HB)

Udupi, Sep 7: Because of increasing density of vehicular traffic in the city, movement of people and vehicles have be rendered difficult. While the issue of ever increasing vehicles on limited roads available in the city have been creating traffic snarls, the scenario at the main junction in the city outskirts is quite different. Unscientific bend on the national highway, absence of service road, absence of traffic signal and shortage of traffic policemen have been giving rise to havoc there on a daily basis. The traffic police are extremely tired by the time they handle the maddening movement of vehicles there. Strangely, this is a routine affair, and not confined to any particular day.

After the corona19-related lockdowns, people have preferred to move around in their own vehicles rather than depending on public transport. Naturally this has contributed to traffic jams both in the mornings and evenings in the city. Traffic jams have become a common occurrence in places like Kalsanka junction, city bus stand, Ambalpady junction etc. But the situation at Kallianpur junction at Santhekatte in the city outskirts is grave to say the least.

This is the scene at this junction that was photographed at 9 am on Monday September 6. People have been blaming the district administration, highway police and traffic police for the chaos here. Even at 9 am, not a single traffic police personnel was present.

If one vehicle gets stranded across the road in an attempt to take a turn, a long line of vehicles is formed immediately and almost everyone is seen honking impatiently. There is no bus stand at the junction and the people have to stand on the divider, waiting for their buses. Because of this, the people had to suffer in the middle of a traffic block.

Senior officials in the traffic police department say that a person who wants to cross the road at the junction, has to have a clear view of what is happening around him in all directions. Heavy vehicles which all of a sudden make an appearance at the junction, take the pedestrians by surprise. At least eight traffic police personnel are needed to manage the traffic here. The traffic police are also compelled to arrange for the smoothie passage of vehicles carrying dignitaries and people's representatives in between. These things have posed a challenge to the traffic police department too, the officials admit.

The locals, passengers, and pedestrians have urged the district administration to intervene and find a permanent solution to the problem at Santhekatte Kallianpur junction at the earliest.

This traffic problem needs urgent attention. Yet many projects of Mandovi and other builders are on the way.. No idea what will happen then.. Better do something now only even if it requires to demolish some bakeries or shops which obstruct the traffic flow.

As a temporary measure, Traffic lights should be installed immediately. Fly over is the only solution. Our Local MLA has done many good works like Ambagilu-Parampally-Manipal Road widening work, Santhekatte main market shifting & building New Building etc. Shri Raghupathi will definitely consider this issue & bring it to a logical conclusion. He has worked a great deal during the pandemic & is continuing the good work along with the DC & Police personnel. Hope he will read this news portal or people close to him should bring this serious issue to his immediate attention.

This is the result of voting brain dead people to power based on religion. More than a dozen people have lost their lives at this unscientific junction. Ask these families about the necessity and urgency of a flyover here. But our MP has other priorities.

Very true, however during the National Highway construction, a feasibility study is required where basic engineering will be performed with various options. Now at this point of time, blaming others to look after the issue is not a solution. However during the four lane expansion of NH 66, the former DC planned to straighten the high way to maximum extent, but due to some geopolitical issues (locals) did not support the issue. Any how if a solution is identified it will be only a short term solution. other than having a flyover at this junction. Hopefully a technically viable solution will be identified to resolve the issue.

Flyovers have been not been constructed wherever necessary such as this and Nanthur Junction. Unnecessary flyovers have been constructed at Surathkal, Kulur, B.C. Road, etc. Now there are plans to construct Ring Road from Mulki to Thokuttu via Kinnigoli, Bajpe and Gurpur. Then what was the need for these innumerous flyovers? These have occupied space with no benefit thereby spoiling the look of the area.

One of the main reason is the bakery which is located in the middle. That was suppose to go during road widening because of the bribe and political influence they diverted the road. Which is also responsible for the un scientific turn. So many accidents there the main reason is this bakery in the middle. Now no one is talking about it. To protect the bakery they have made a rickshaw stand next to it. No matter what you do this chaos will not end as long as they dont do the road asp the original planning. Santhekatte Kallianpur is one of the fast developing place with high revenue people living there. Definitely every house has 4 wheelers. 1 college 2 Churches, Temples, Hospitals new multi storey buildings we can imagine. Over bridge is a temporary solution road widening with over bridge can solve the problem, permanently. I am sure all Santhekatte Kallianpur people will agree with me.

One of the problems is allowing buses/trucks into the service road.they take so much place in the service road which causes major hassle for cars coming the other way. The only solution i see out of this is a traffic stop(s) or a HUGE roundabout. Probably this will happen soon since elections are coming lol.

Let's not exaggerate this one as most of the bends on our roads are absolutely unscientific. Pumpwell flyover is so unscientific that even now digging under the flyover goes no to this day to coverup the blunder. Have the engineers been held responsible? We lack civic sense as we have become communal and no social injustice disturbs us anymore.
