Mangaluru: Fishermen have good catches, smiles back on their faces

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 11: The fishermen are happy as they have been getting catches of fish of the variety which can be exported. With this, they are happy that lady luck has smiled at them after a long wait, at the very beginning of the new fishing season.

Fishing had been hit hard by problems one after the other over the last year. Trawl boat operators have been getting fish catches of varieties like squids, Rani fish, etc this time. Even the purse seine boat owners are getting good catches. Fish lovers from the district are getting fresh fish of exotic varieties.

Fishes meant for export are sent to Kochi, Goa and Gujarat. 90 percent boats have started to undertake fishing activity after the diesel subsidy issue was sorted out. After a gap of two years, during which the fishing industry was hit by Covid, lack of workers, cyclone etc the fishermen have got something to celebrate. Hiked diesel prices had also affected them very much.

The fresh fishing season should have opened on August 1 after the fishing holiday. But because there was delay in getting diesel subsidy passbooks, most of the boats fully got engaged with fishing after August 15 after getting diesel without taxes at the diesel delivery point.

As the sea is calm now, the environment is ideal for deep sea fishing. Other activities that are dependent on fishing like ice plants, shops, hotels, fish cutting, transport and other sectors have also started to work full time. Fishing workers are getting good salaries and those who undertake door to door sale of fishes or in small markets, are making profits. Similarly, fishing at Malpe too has been good this time. The fishermen fondly hope that this environment will prevail throughout the year.

Regarding Kinnigoli to Damaskatte to Bajpe to Shirva-Manchkal once belonged to four christian sisters who unmarried. Said place given to them by rulers who left the place as these womens father use to work with them. Latter on in the name of religion some of land acquired by churches slowly and others also followed. Latter on government also intervene in this matter. Even in Ghatta..same thing happened..while Britishers left given to people who are sincered with them life long. Good example is now of America left Afghanistan leaving behind all weapons and machinery.

I think river fish in DK and Udupi is costly, but in Bangalore, we get river fish between 150 and 250 per kg. The sea fish in Bangalore naturally has to be costly, but, considering the price in Kinnigoli, there is no much difference. In Yeswantpur market, medium size white pampret price is 1200 per kg, black pampret (halwa) 900, king fish between 700 and 1000, large Nang (lepo) 340, shark 400, bangude 260 to 300, large sardine 240, tiger prawns 900, medium prawns 600, crabs between 280 and 320. Why Kinnigoil is having more or less same price is because, Bangalore people are working class and they know the value of money. Kinnigoli people are enjoying, because people are having father, son, brother or husband working outside India. Henry Ford, founder of Ford motor co was asked why he was taking $ 10 meal, while his son was taking $ 100 meal, he said "my son has a rich father".

Not more than 50% of the catch should be allowed to be exported but must be allowed for local consumpution. The locals are denied what is rightfully theirs. We have issues with fishermen from outside catching fish here but we allow our fish to be enjoyed by outsiders.

Hi , I am from Seafood industry. Actually it is myth that, first quality goes to exports and last quality comes to local consumption. when the fish is caught the quality of catch are the same. the fishes are sold based on demand and price in auction. Boats with the present price of fuel, labour cost and Ration plus the cost of the boat , it's finance interest maintenance have a cost. The fishes are sold to highest bidders and sometimes certain fishes like Indian Mackerel , Seer Fish gets highest price in local market and cannot be exported at all. There are many varieties of fishes from past 30years are not been able to export because the local market pays better prices. Hence, all best goes to exports is a myth. but, exporters do have very good infrastructure such as proper Freezer vehicles to carry the Raw fish from Harbour to factory, ample ice with a good climatic room to preserve the temperatures and within 24 hours all the fishes irrespective of quantity purchased are Frozen and put in the cold storages and preserved for almost 18months from date of Freezing at minus 21degrees Celsius. where as the fishes taken by the fish mongers start deteriorating from the time they collect the fish from the boats. due to multiple hands changing, wrong method of storing , temperature abuse due to climate and atmosphere. They don't wash the left over fish or change the water ( as the fish deteriorates the ice water in which the fish is kept will start developing bacteria's which will further decompose the fishes. it's just that, our fishermen are using very old method to sell to such large population. moreover large fishes with big gut needs to be handled with more care than small sizes. hence, it is always better to buy the fish from the local catch and as closer to sea or landing center.

whatever you say shetty, it is my experience that land of monkeys and Udupi are the worst when it comes to public..they never bargain because they think that it is below their standard.. in statebank fish market that is one fat lady who sits on the left side as you enter..she openly tells local fish buyers who ask the price of fish saying "INDU NIKLEG ATHYE..GULFDAKLEG"..so all know what is going on...all your explanation does not stand good. Your advice asking public to go to dhakke and buy is not practical..basically fishermen community are also looting...just see the fat gold chains worn by them.

The fisherwomen of Mangalore have brought their own downfall and downfall of the fish industry. First they dont know how to deal respectfully with their customers. They are abusive and dis-respectful and this prompts the customers to stay away from fish markets. Secondly i have noticed for a long time, fisher women abusing customers of a particular community. I have noticed this mostly in State bank fish market. Even though they have good buying power, those people now stay away from fish markets because of these foul mouthed women. So the fishing community are to blame for themselves and no one else.
