Doha, Oct 11: An Indian woman named Beebi Lumada, a native of Kerala state, died at Muscat airport after being stranded there for four days. She was detained at the airport, as she had lost her passport, said an official of the Indian embassy here on Sunday October 10. Reportedly, she lost her passport while changing flight in Doha.
Beebi Lumada was working as a housemaid in Muscat. Officials said she could not even been sent back to Muscat, as she had got her residential permit in Muscat cancelled, before travelling to India. Newspapers reported airport officials as saying that the immigration department and Indian embassy, which were informed of the situation, did nothing to move her out of the airport. Beebi, in course of time, was overwhelmed with fear, suffered from symptoms of hysteria and died of some illness. The actual cause of her death is yet to be established. She breathed her last while being carried to a hospital. On Monday last, she was trying to return to Thiruvananthapuram through a Qatar Airways flight via Doha. She was not allowed to take the flight, as she had lost her passport.
She stayed in the transit area of Muscat airport, where she was provided with food. It is learnt that the Indian embassy, which was trying to help her, could not get any documents for paving way for her travel to India. On Friday, her health deteriorated. She was being shifted to Ibn Sina Hospital when she died in the ambulance itself, the officials said. The body of the woman is being flown back to India soon.
