Mangaluru: Government ITIs set to be upgraded, offer latest courses

Mangaluru, Sep 18: Towards brightening the employment opportunities of the youngsters studying in the 150 government industrial training institutes (ITI) in the state, the government has been upgrading them with modern facilities at a cost of Rs 30 crore each. The works will be completed by October this year after which the courses are expected to begin.

The ITIs are being upgraded with the adoption of improved technology with the participation of Tatas. Five ITIs in Dakshina Kannada and four in Udupi district have been chosen for the purpose. The plan will be executed soon.

The state has 1,713 ITIs, out of which 270 are government, 196 are aided, and 1,247 private ones. A total of 1.8 lac students study in the polytechnic and engineering courses offered here. The officials are confident that the upgradation work, which has been undertaken in the men's and women's ITIs in Mangaluru, Narimogaru ITI at Puttur, Vittal ITI, Beltangady ITI and the four ITIs in Udupi district at Udupi, Byndoor, Perdoor and Karkala will be concluded within one and half months.

In the year 2021-22, new long term courses like computer aided manufacturing, manufacturing process control and automation, industrial robotics and digital manufacturing, advanced plumbing advanced tools and advanced automatic engineering, battery electric vehicle, basics of design and virtual verifications, internet of things advanced manufacturing courses will be offered. Likewise, short term courses are also on offer.

Including all the things in one course is not possible. The students have the choice to pick courses where job opportunities are brighter. Selection process has not yet been undertaken. For long term courses, a SSLC pass is a must and the student should have studied science and mathematics. For short term courses, final year ITI students and those working in ITI graduation and advanced technology sectors have chances of admission, officials stated.

Skill development officer of the district, Giridhar Salian, said that the ITIs are being upgraded with 88 percent of Tata funding and 12 percent state contribution. He said that depending on the individual needs, construction work, fitting of machinery etc are going on and teachers are being trained.
