Jaya TV Gets Threat Call, Jayalalithaa Warned

Chennai, Oct 13 (IANS) Tamil television channel Jaya TV Wednesday said it received a threatening call, warning of an attack if it aired news against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). It also asked AIADMK general secretary J.Jayalalithaa not to address a rally in Madurai Oct 18.

Jaya TV, run by close associates of Jayalalithaa, has lodged a police complaint about the call it got early morning, Jaya TV's vice president (News) K.P. Sunil told reporters here.

Sunil said the channel got a call at 4.45 a.m. and the caller, who identified himself only as "colonel", threatened that the office would be demolished by a suicide bomber if it continued to air news against the LTTE, which was defeated by the Sri Lankan military in May 2009.

The caller also warned that Jayalalithaa would face the same fate if she addressed a party rally in Madurai Oct 18.

Channel officials had recorded the call and have submitted a copy to the city police, Sunil said.

Jaya TV received a series of threatening letters soon after Jayalalithaa announced her intention to address a public rally in Madurai.

AIADMK MPs complained about the threat calls to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P. Chidambaram and had demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Tamil Nadu government transferred the case to CBI Sep 28.
