Kaup, Sep 29: A fisherman who missed the bus and therefore was walking towards Kaup after visiting the parental home of his wife, lost his life after an unidentified vehicle hit him in a hit and run case which happened at Katapady on national highway 66.
The victim of the accident was Girish Mendon (39), residing near the Lighthouse in Kaup Padu village. He was a fisherman by profession. The boat for which he worked had anchored at Mangaluru on September 27. He had visited his family with some fish. He then went to the parental home of his wife at Mandarthi in the evening and had left from there, by telling the family that he would be returning to Mangaluru.
When he tried to return to Kaup on way to Mangaluru at midnight on Monday, he missed the bus and hence reportedly decided to walk to Kaup from Mandarthi. When he reached near the Kiya showroom in Katapady, an unidentified vehicle coming from the direction of Udupi hit him and sped away. He died instantly.
The police arranged for the identification of the body through Kishore Mendon, brother of the deceased who visited the spot. The Kaup police had a hard time finding an ambulance to carry the body at that unearthly hour as 108 ambulances cannot be used for transporting bodies and government ambulances too refuse to carry bodies many a time. The police then contacted social worker, Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, who arranged for an ambulance of the Life Care Foundation to carry the body to the district hospital.
A case has been registered at Kaup police station. The police have undertaken investigation and trying to find out the vehicle involved with this accident.
