India slaps reciprocal restrictions on visiting UK nationals

New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS): India on Friday decided to impose reciprocal Covid-19 restrictions on UK nationals arriving in the country.

According to sources, the new regulations will come into effect from October 4 - the same day as the UK's new rules, and will be applicable to all UK nationals arriving from the UK.

Citing the restrictions, a source said that from October 4 onwards, all UK nationals arriving in India from the UK, irrespective of their vaccination status, will have to undertake mandatory measures, such as carrying the report of pre-departure Covid-19 RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours before travel, and undergo Covid-19 RT-PCR test on arrival at any airport in India.

They are also expected to go for mandatory quarantine at home or at the destination address for 10 days after arrival in India, and on the 8th day after their arrival, will have to take a second RT-PCR test.

The sources also said that the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare and Civil Aviation have been asked to strictly enforce the new measures and adequate arrangements must be made at all international airports for this purpose.

Before issuing these mandatory Covid-19 restrictions for travellers from the UK, India had given a warning to UK authorities that it would be well within its rights to initiate reciprocal measures if the UK does not ease the new travel rules relating to Covid-19 vaccine certification for Indian nationals.

The row between the two countries started when the UK government placed Indians, who have been vaccinated with Covishield - the Indian-made AstraZeneca Covid vaccine - in the category of "unvaccinated" and prescribed testing and quarantine measures but after India hinted that this might be reciprocated, the UK accepted Covishield but did not change the testing and quarantine rules.

This tit for tat reaction could backfire in a bad way. Astra Zeneca is not recognized in the US and some countries in the West because of the efficacy is as low as 38%, and it failed in the clinical trials, whereas Phizer and Moderna the efficacy is over 90%. I sincerely India could reconsider its decision because most travelers from the West to India are coming to see their families and friends and putting them in quarantine will only dissuade them to come in larger numbers. Whereas Indians going to the West are main Students and businessmen.

99% of the so-called UK nationals visiting India are persons of Indian origin. So, on the one hand this Indian leadership keeps announcing that it loves the Indian diaspora (and wants its investments in India), and on the other wants to make the PIOs suffer. Countries around the world have absolutely no trust in Indian products and services. India needs to make Universities independent of political control, and encourage real research.

This looks like Don Quixote fighting the wind mills in legends. The credibility of Indian medical practices took a hit when the government recognized the traditional medical practices and permitted that the traditional medical practitioners too can conduct some surgeries. Now who in his right mind will agree for a minor surgery under such people where one cannot easily distinguish a quack from a qualified doctor ?Traditional medicines have their own place in our country, but you cannot keep it at par with a surgeon who has several years of qualifications. The certificates that are available in India have become a joke all over the world. We must be dealing with this root cause of credibility issue, but instead try to fight the western governments . How many Brits would be worried they cannot visit India ? On the other hand the only people who will suffer will be Indians. Even the funerals of the loved ones would be off limits to them now. it takes educated to governed a nation.

Only solution to evade all so called restrictions is to keep your mobile phone at home and also wear a monkey cap (only while travelling not at the venue) when you are attending the funeral or wedding / or any function of your loved ones. Do not carry your mobile with you. Those who are living U.K are not stupid to Visit India for no reason during this time.
