Moodbidri: 15-day Kambala training at Abbakka village nearing completion

Moodbidri, Oct 2: Moodbidri Kadalakere Kambala Conservation, Maintenance and Training Academy have organized a 15-day Kambala sport training camp at Koti-Chennaya Kambala sport stadium located in Veerarani Abbakka Cultural Village.

Addressing a press meet at Moodbidri on Friday October 1, president of the academy, Prof K Gunapal Kadamba, said that this sixth bath of training, which started on September 19, will end on October 4. He said that about 219 persons in the age group of 18 to 25 had applied and 33 people were finalised. They belong to Dakshina Kannada Udupi and Kasargod districts, he explained.

"Those participating in the camp are given fixed time tables and training is imparted on those lines. Along with Kambala training, the participants are also taught Yoga, how to take care and groom the Kambala buffalos, preparing their food, making of the bamboo stick,, 'Badu', Ponake and Henike. They also get to know the culture of Tulunadu. Owners of Kambala buffalos have provided 40 buffalos for the purpose of training," he narrated.

Vasant Jogi, John D'Silva, Vishwanath Prabhu Shirva, Suresh Shetty, Ajitkumar Jain, Adiraj Jain, Sridhar, Dileep, Vinay and Dayananda are participating as resource persons. The candidate with the best performance will get a prize. On October 10, selected candidates will hold experimental Kambala. There is a plan to start a Kambala research centre and also to create records of Kambala, he stated.

Academy directors, Suresh Poojary, Appanna, Seetharam Shetty, Ajith Kumar and Vishwanath were present.

Srijan Rai, who is a physical education teacher by profession, said that he had lot of interest in Kambala and therefore joined the training which has helped him to learn about the sport. He said that he had the time to take part here as schools are not currently undertaking any sports activities.

Owner of Kambala Buffalos Gopalakrishna Bhat said that in addition to grass, Kambala buffalos need to be provided with specific food every day. Whenever the temperature is high, they need to be bathed to keep their bodies cool, he added.
