BJP Trounces Congress in Gujarat Polls

Ahmedabad, Oct 24 (PTI): After defeating Congress in municipal corporation polls, Gujarat's ruling BJP today maintained its winning streak in panchayats and remaining civic bodies elections here.

The counting for elections of 24 district panchayats, 208 taluka panchayats and 53 municipalities held on Thursday, was held today.

Out of the 24 district panchayats, BJP won clear majority in 21 while Congress got majority in Gandhinagar and Tapi. The poll to district panchyat of Bharuch produced a hung verdict.

Out of the 208 taluka panchayats, results of 157 were declared, in which BJP won 122, Congress 20 and Janata Dal(U) two while in the three taluka panchayats the verdict was fractured.

In the 53 municipalities elections, the BJP has won 42 seats while Congress and others got four seats respectively. In Porbandar both the BJP and Congress won 21 seats each out of the total 42 seats.

State Congress president Siddarth Patel resigned after the polls results, taking moral responsibility for the defeat. He has sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.

Chief minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally after his party's victory, said the polls results indicate that BJP has been supported by poor people, Muslims and tribals.
