Udupi: Unlit 5-km stretch - Locals hold unique burning torch protest

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Nov 3: Locals living on Udupi-Manipal national highway held a unique protest to bring the apathy of the administration to light. They held burning torches on the national highway during night as there are no street lights on this stretch for five km.

District citizens’ committee held this protest against the district administration as their repeated pleas to install street lights have fallen on deaf ears. The committee erected poles throughout the five km stretch and kept burning torches made of coconut tree branches on it and urged the administration to take corrective action.

Committee convener Nithyananda Olakadu expressed extreme anger on the administration’s apathy.

They spend crores of tax payers money for unnecessary concretization even when the tar road is in good condition. They do not install streetlights in the city. Night time it is dangerous, also during rainy season. Nowadays there is solar lights which can be installed, but our govt becomes alive only during election.

Let them come back to power and continue development work which they left in 2014. Cow government in not capable of providing at least lighrs to the existing highway which was constructed in past 60 y .

Well done dear citizens....may your efforts give you success....Such situation prevailed in one of the highways for more than 2 years...even after collecting taxes promptly....many robberies happened on those who walk on their way home. Departments negligent towards their duties and they wait for citizens to protest....

Udupi elected minister talk about other party, no development for public, (road maintenance and street light). only they want power and live lavishly to make personal property, nothing else for public development, we should not vote these ministers in future.
