Mysuru, Nov 6: The region has been getting heavy rainfall frequently. Due to rains which lashed the area during the early hours of Friday November 5, the hill suffered a landslide for the third time in recent weeks.
About two weeks back, the side of the road leading to Nandi atop Chamundi Hill had suffered a landslide. This had given rise to worries among the residents.
The road leading to Nandi had experienced landslide once in the past. Three days back, the road suddenly developed a crack. Now, due to heavy rain in the wee hours of Friday, the area experienced a landslide once again.
Mysru district in-charge minister, S T Somashekhar, speaking to media persons, said that PWD minister, C C Patil, will undertake scrutiny of the region and take suitable steps. The PWD officials will conduct inspections and take temporary measures for now, he added.
M Laxman, a member of the Institute of Engineers team, expressed the opinion that landslides are happening in Chamundi HIll because of the fact that huge complexes have come up on the hill. "Because of the complexes, rainwater gets blocked as it does not have proper channels to flow down. Because of the stranded water, the area through which the roads pass absorb moisture and suffer landslides. Substandard work and movement of too many heavily loaded vehicles too are responsible for the landslides, he analysed.
