CBI arrests ex-Assam CM Saikia's son in bank loan default case

Guwahati, Nov 7 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Ashok Saikia, the eldest son of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, in a bank loan default case.

The CBI team arrested Saikia, the brother of Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia, from his residence in Guwahati's Sarumataria in a case related to Rs 9.37 lakh loan taken from the Assam State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (ASCARDB) in 1996.

The case was initially registered at Paltan Bazar police station in Guwahati in 1998 and later transferred to the CBI in 2001 after two complaints were filed with the probe agency.

Debabrata Saikia, also Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, told the media that his brother was being victimised for a loan he had already repaid long ago to the bank and he would certainly get justice from the court.

The opposition Congress released a letter of the ASCARDB on Sunday where it was shown that Saikia had availed the loan of Rs 9,37,701 from the bank in 1996 for business but in 2015, he had cleared the dues and H.N. Borah, the then General Manager of the bank, had in a letter on October 10, 2015, said the loan had been liquidated under the compromise settlement scheme.

This is nothing but dirty politics played by the ruling party and our National Agencies are being misused. If the ruling party was transparent in their thoughts, words and deeds, they should have the guts and courage to arrest those who have committed frauds amounting to crores and crores of rupees. Few are still enjoying life in India and few of them are enjoying life abroad. And here we are arresting someone who has just 9.4lacs. What a shame. Our ruling people should have some basic sense and responsibility before they start targeting opposition leaders, just to settle scores with a cheap mentality.

The Country is painfully aware of how the Central Agencies are being misused to target opposition Leaders and Parties. This is the Ugly face of Modi's Maan Ki Baat and his innocent pretensions behind TV cameras in his repeated addresses to the Nation.Central Government Tax and Enforcement Agencies like Income Tax Dept and Enforcement Directorate have rarely raided BJP Leaders over the last six years. It will be nice to know through the media if any BJP leader has been issued any IT or ED Notice during the last six years. ED or IT departments would have known that large sums of money were transacted for luring of MLAs at the time of toppling of non-BJP governments but have turned a blind eye. Gross misuse of Central Agencies to target political opponents. Just Harassment and Blackmail. what about all the Gujarati Businessmen whose loans have been waived off by Modi and Amit Shah.
