Pressure from Hindu outfits: Karnataka to soon enact law on religious conversions

Bengaluru, Nov 13 (IANS): Coming under pressure from Hindu outfits and religious pontiffs, the Karnataka government is all set to enact a law on religious conversions soon, according to sources.

The Sri Ram Sena has warned that it would launch a statewide agitation if the ruling BJP government in Karnataka doesn't enact a law to ban forceful conversions.

Sources in the BJP confirmed that the government is all set to make a law in this regard and the bill will be mooted in the coming winter session scheduled to be held in Suvarna Soudha at Belagavi next month.

Seers of various mutts have appealed to the state government for implementing the act.

Sri Ram Sena Chief Pramod Muthalik who met Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday, warned that if the state government fails to enact the law, all Hindu religious seers in Karnataka would launch the agitation.

According to Muthalik, "religious conversions are taking place from the period of the British".

Chief Minister Bommai responded positively to the demand, saying: "The Karnataka government is already studying the laws passed by some states in this regard. Karnataka would soon come out with its own act."

He added that Constitution is clear against conversions by means of force and inducements. "I have spoken against this in the past too," he maintained.

The issue of religious conversions was raised by Hosadurga BJP MLA Goolihatti Shekar during the Monsoon session.

He had claimed that thousands have been converted in his constituency and missionaries' have foisted rape and atrocity cases on those who questioned conversion activities.

Later, he had organised a 'Ghar wapsi' programme in his constituency to bring back Hindus from Christianity.

Forced conversions is wrong and definitely not allowed. However, the extremists parties will use this to drag people out of churches and force them to convert back to Hinduism even if the person willingly choose christianity. All that forceful re-conversation will come under "Ghar wapasi" and be accepted, hidden and not spoken about because it will all happen in small towns. There is already so many reports of attack on churches and the Shiv Sena or RSS barging into small churches in the small towns and beating up ppl.

Don't misbehave with any Christians. If you torture any christian God will not tolerate. Just go through the scriptures. When Paul was on his way to persecute Christians of course Paul didn't see Christ before. Paul fell down from the horse and he heard a voice. I am Jesus whom you are persecuting This message clearly understand that if you persecute a christian that means you are persecuting Jesus. Be careful and don't run after Christian missionaries Life is beautiful. Work hard and live happily. If they convert according to their will leave them alone By force conversion is not good.

I totally agree with your comment. Jesus is real. Paul was a jew and persecuted many Christians. Finally converted and followed Jesus. That is the fate of all these persecutors to see the suffering face of Jesus and surrender themselves to Christ. Chrisinity means suffering like christ and even with a suffering show love and kindness to fellow humans with best possible ways and forgive your enemies. If whole India convert to christianity is a good sign for the prosperity of the nation and citizens will enjoy respect and dignity equally for all fellow citizens like western nations without religious bias or caste based descrimination.

But I can't see why people would volunteer to convert themselves "forcefully". Or, does it mean that a person does not volunteer at all? I am really, really confused. BTW, not a single person so far has come forward to forcefully convert me. I would be totally traumatised if I am forcefully converted into a meat eater.

What is forcible conversion? It used to happen in Goa during the period of Inquisition there. No force can make a person convert to another religion and as soon as the force disappears the sensible return to their former faith. There is no need for a law to prohibit forced conversions. India is not the same as when the Muslims came down with fire and sword and Vasco de Gama came with a cross and priests.

Karnataka Govt should ask all the Hindu oufits specially Sri Rama Sena, Bhajrang Dal, Hindu Jagarana Vedike and associtions should get registered immediately. Then people believe the man (almost always it is a man). Then the man gets free food, free palace, free women and every other luxury.

If coming to Hindu religion is an enlightenment, why not coming into Islam/Christianity too is enlightenment ? Why welcome to only to go into one religion but barrage into others ? What would you do if all the Indian Hindus accept the religion of whichever foreign country they are in ? Is politically correct ? Please don't give me the enticement excuse, even the Indian PM is on power out of enticement. Enticement of 15 Lakhs.
