Mangalore: Rain Turns Nightmare for Farmers, Motorists

Mangalore, Nov 12: Parts of the coast enjoyed sunny weather the entire day, while the others received rains with speeding gale since Thursday November 11 afternoon. At night however, the sky opened up, and torrential rains coupled with lightning dashed the hopes of farmers, while inundating low-lying areas. Kodagu district too received some rains. Road repair works undertaken by various agencies including PWD and National Highways Authority of India were adversely affected due to rains.

At B C Road, traffic was affected for nearly three hours, after the edge of the road collapsed. Landslide was experienced at the spot where low-lying land near the fly over pillars was filled with earth. The spot was repaired with sand and stones later. Water supply to B C Road was affected as the ten-inch wide pipeline supplying water passing through this spot was broken.  In Subrahmanya, rains continued to pour since morning through night. Both Kannadi rivulet and Kumaradhara River there are overflowing. Hundreds of areca nut, coconut and banana trees fell to the ground due to winds of high velocity.  Puttur, Kadaba, Uppinangady and surrounding places too received heavy rains, turning the colour of water in Netravati River into red. The city too got heavy rains since nightfall on Thursday.

Most parts of Udupi district experienced heavy rains since Thursday afternoon. Paddy crops that were ready to be harvested, have suffered maximum losses. A person named Lachchu Marakala (65) from Baidebettu Doopadabettu of Hosur village in Udupi district was admitted to Manipal Hospital with grave injuries inflicted by lightning. He was at his home when lightning struck, and suffered injuries to his chest and back. Marakala’s wife, Jayanti, grand children, Srishti and Satwik, whose injuries are of minor nature, too were admitted to the same hospital. Wiring, walls and the entire house of Marakala suffered extensive damages in the incident. The house and wiring of belonging to Soosan near Alangar Mt Rosary Hospital were damaged due a lightning that struck the house on Thursday night.

Heavy rains were also reported from Kasargod district. The meteorological department has predicted normal to heavy rains in the coast and some regions of southern hinterlands. This prediction is valid till Saturday morning.
