Udupi, Nov 13: A watchman, who was trying to retrieve a key that was left inside an apartment by its owner by mistake, fell down from a height of about 50 feet and lost his life on the night of Wednesday. The death occurred, as the rope snapped even as the watchman was trying to climb down.

Mahantesh alias Ramesh from Mulugunda in Gadag district, was working as the watchman of Blue Moon Apartment in the city. On Wednesday, Ashok Kumar, working as the divisional manager of National Insurance Company, forgot to take his key while going out on Wednesday. On his return, he realized that the door of his flat No. 303 had got locked automatically, and that he did not have its key.

Reportedly, Kumar asked the watchman to go up the terrace of the flat, get down to his apartment by using a rope, enter it through the window and open the door of his flat. However, the rope snapped when the watchman was getting down, causing his death.

In a complaint filed with the town police station, wife of the watchman, Renuka Basamma, said that her husband’s death was caused due to the negligence of Kumar, who had provided a brittle rope for climbing down the terrace. She also accused Kumar of forcing Mahantesh to undertake this adventure, without even caring to provide him with any life saving equipment.
