Udupi: Professional coconut tree climber falls to death

Udupi, Nov 20: Gopala Naika (41), resident of Udupi, had been climbing coconut trees to pluck coconuts as his profession since the last 15 years. He climbed the coconut tree belonging to Naresh Shetty, near Kadiyali Kamalabai high school, Shivalli grama on November 20 at about 9 am when he lost balance and fell down from about 25 feet high tree.

He suffered severe injuries to his head and succumbed while being shifted to KMC Manipal for treatment. A case under UDR 48/2021 section 174 CrPC is registered in this connection at Udupi city police station on the basis of a police complaint lodged by Gopala Naika, younger brother of the deceased.

    Police complaint for this accidntal fall? On what basis? Tree climbers should protect themselves and if they slip and fall, the blame should be on theTREE or on the equipment they use to climb. A few years ago DJW reported a Kerala person inventing an automatic lift to climb trees; perhaps that would have saved many from falling by manually climbing.

    Mohan Prabhu Canada ,You are right.The said equipment to climb Areca tree is being used now everywhere .Same canbe used to coconut tree I think.It is being operated.with diesel motor.Operator can sit on it and operate it to climb up or down.One can pluck areca frpm other trees too sitting in one place.Sad to hear about pluckers death.may his soul rest in peace.
