Why is DMK Opposing JPC on 2G Spectrum, asks Jayalalithaa

Chennai, Nov 17 (IANS) Opposing a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scandal shows that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi lacks confidence in alliance partner Congress, AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa said Wednesday.

"As far as we are concerned a JPC comprising of senior members of parliament from various political parties should probe the spectrum issue," Jayalalithaa said in a statement issued here Wednesday.

Karunanidhi had wondered whether the opposition lacks confidence in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which would go into the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the issue, as it is headed by BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi while a JPC would be headed by a senior Congress member.

Citing former union telecom minister and DMK MP A. Raja's statement that he committed no wrong, Jayalalithaa wondered why Karunanidhi feared a JPC probe.

Reiterating that her offer of support to the Congress if the DMK withdrew from the union government was instrumental in the party directing Raja to quit Sunday, Jayalalithaa said: "That was a simple missile that rattled Karunanidhi. What will he do if bigger missiles like criminal case and arrest warrants are issued to those involved in the spectrum scam."
