Mangaluru, Dec 10: Someshwara beach is one of the important beaches of Dakshina Kannada district. The beach suffers from lack of maintenance and shortage of basic amenities. People, who visit the beach either to offer 'Pinda' to their deceased forefathers or for spending good time, curse themselves for having chosen this place.
This beach also happens to be a spot of religious tourism as the ancient temple dedicated to Lord Somanatha is located next to the beach. Every day, thousands of people visit this place. In the morning, hundreds of people come here to offer Pinda. Providing basic facilities at such places happens to be the duty of the concerned. Compared to other beaches, the tourists at Someshwar do not have enough facilities.
There is a toilet for the public use at the beach but because it is not maintained, people cannot enter them. Both the toilets meant for men and women are stinking. There are no benches at the beach. Even though the people can rest on the sand, those suffering from knee joint pain or arthritis will find it hard to spend time. Those visiting the beach feel that the benches can be installed when the rains recede, and can be kept away during the monsoon season to avoid to them from getting spoiled.
There is a hi-mast lamp at the beach but the light at the top does not glow. The bracket meant for fixing the bulb has rusted and fallen at the base of the pole. Because of lack of lighting, the beach has turned dangerous, and also provides opportunities for immoral activities. Those visiting the beach want the authorities to attend to the maintenance of toilets, provision of benches and enough lighting at the beach.
