Mangaluru, Dec 15: The city corporation here has instructed Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) not to undertake any new work till the pipeline it has already undertaken is completed and complaints are attended to.
There have been complaints from the citizens about the drinking water pipelines getting damaged due to the gas pipeline. The corporation has decided to approve new works only after GAIL sets right the defects at places where the gas pipelines have already been laid. Till then, GAIL has been asked not to dig any new roads. In this respect, the superintending engineer of the corporation and other engineers had a discussion with the GAIL representatives.
City corporation commissioner Akshy Sridhar, said that the corporation has received complaints about water pipelines having been damaged on account of the GAIL works and that in some places even the underground drainage pipelines were damaged. He said that the corporation officials have held talks with the company and that for the present, the company has been asked to take fresh works only after addressing the damages already inflicted.
Water supply to areas like Kodialbail, Boloor, Shivbagh etc has been affected because of this problem, the impact of which has been compounded by the fact that there is a 30 percent cut in water supply from Thumbe dam because of the jackwell works going on there. In some places, GAIL has left behind the mud it has dug at the spot, whereas in some others, concrete or asphalted roads have been dug and left as it is. Because of unscientific works, pedestrians reportedly are also facing problems.
