Mangaluru, Dec 18: The construction of new building for Kudmul Ranga Rao women's hostel at Kodialbail is now being executed at a fast pace. The social welfare department wants to complete the work within six months.
Foundation stone for the building had been laid in April this year. The four-storey building will be constructed at an expense of eight crore rupees. The work has been given additional trust from the very beginning.
The earlier building which was 30 year old, was used for providing free food and hostel facilities for the girl students belonging scheduled castes and tribes coming from far of places. It had become dilapidated. The hostel inmates had protested about the poor condition of the building. After the expert report found that the hostel building was not fit for inhabitancy, the inmates were shifted elsewhere. Now fresh grant has been sanctioned, old building has been demolished, and new building is coming up. The building is expected to be completed by June next year.
The new building will be able to accommodate about 800 students. Every year, lot of applications are received, and eligible girl students are chosen. As there is good demand for hostels here from students coming from outside, and the number of students in the city is more, it is said that many are not getting hostel accommodations now.
Deputy director of social welfare department, Siddalingesha Bevainamati, said that the building is expected to be completed before the onset of next monsoon and it is proposed to provide hostel accommodation to girl students here from next academic year.
