Puttur, Dec 21: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded for the registration of cases against those accused of engineering attack on Uppinangady police station under the provisions relating to sedition. The demand came from VHP Mangaluru division secretary Sharan Pumpwell, and Bajrang Dal southern province coordinator Murali Hasantadka.
They addressed a press meet on Monday December 20. "The fact that activists of the PFI and SDPI entered Uppinangady police station on December 14 and attacked the police station is a worrisome development. The attempt on the lives of the police who are meant to protect the people has made the citizens fearful," they said.
Sharan Pumpwell accused the PFI activists of bringing sabers, soda bottles, stones and other lethal weapons in their ambulance and trying to kill the police by attacking them with these things. He also stated that over 500 people from the nearby mosque unexpectedly came, smashed the window glasses of the police station and attacked the vehicles of the police department.
Deputy superintendent of police, Gana P Kumar, sub-inspector Prasanna and women staff were injured in this act. They claimed that this was a pre-planned attack in which many young people from Kerala and Dakshina Kannada, driven by Jihadi mindset, took part in this incident. They also termed this as a terrorist act. They said that similar acts had been committed in DJ Halli, and KG Halli police station limits at Bengaluru where police vehicles were torched and public property worth lacs were damaged besides damaging many buildings including the police station. In that incident, the government had registered sedition cases against the concerned. They said that the SDPI and PFI activists who undertook illegal acts, which is an attack on the safety and security of the country, are fit to be considered as treason.
The leaders said that in the case of attack on fish merchants, Ashok, Mohan and Mahesh Bhandary, only three have been arrested by the police and ten main accused are still at large. They wanted to know why the police are not arresting them. In the case of attacking Uppinangady police station too, only ten have been arrested, and hundreds more need to be taken into custody, they noted. They said that the accused have falsely claimed to be ill and got admitted into hospital. They also accused the police department of dithering in the matter of making arrests because of pressure exerted by PFI and SDPI.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad Puttur district president Dr Krishna Prasanna, district secretary Satish and Sridhar Tenkila were present.
