Mangalore: DC Seeks Closure of Vittal Stone Quarry

Mangalore, Dec 5: Deputy commissioner (DC) Subodh Yadav has sought closure of the quarry near Vittal of Bantwal from as many as 50 bonded labourers were rescued, recently. He has further written to the government for cancellation of the lease.

It is leant that the DC has written to the principal secretary (revenue) and to the department of mines and geology. He has also directed the concerned officials of the department to check if such practices exist in other quarries across the district.

Meanwhile, a complaint has been filed by Bantwal tahsildar Vittal police station accusing Hazi, the owner of the vittal quarry of violating the provisions of the Bonded Labour (abolition) Act 1976. An FIR was registered following which Hazi was arrested and later released on bail.

An inquiry has also been ordered into alleged failure of the taluk-level officers in monitoring the working of the quarry.
