Udupi, Jan 20: A bank here was made to pay a customer compensation for mental torture and delay in addressing his problems.

The customer of State Bank of India Manipal branch, said that he was frustrated with the attitude of the employees of the bank who used to debit his account before the due date of his housing loan instalments and thereby leave his account with nil balance and then deactivate it. He had repeatedly complained about this for at least seven months but the bank staff did not heed to his peaceful requests.

He then started to send emails to the Reserve Bank of India. For the two initial emails, the bank gave an evasive reply. But he followed the issue doggedly. The bank was made to pay him a sum of Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental torture and delay in addressing his problems. He has advised the people who fail to get their problems addressed to approach the banking ombudsman and the Reserve Bank of India so that their problems are attended to quickly and solved.
