Udupi, Jan 23: In an amicable attempt to preserve the ancestral house, a family in Kaup taluk decided to lift the house from the ground and raise the foundation to an extent of 3 feet.

Ajith Shetty and family from Kalya Majalaguttu here made an innovative attempt to raise the base of their house thus solving two problems, just with a few heavy weight jacks. The house was built by their father, the late Ravindra Shetty, 22 years ago. It was one of the first RCC houses in the locality. But during the rainy season, the family used to face many problems like water logging and floods. The rain water used to enter the house. The family wanted to preserve the house as well as find a solution for flooding. Shetty, who is a businessman in Bengaluru, had heard about the jack-lifting technology. He decided to use the same technology on his ancestral house and raise the base of the house by 3 feet.

Speaking about this innovative idea of jack lifting, Shetty says, "The house was built by my father. We decided to raise the house, 3 feet from the ground. The work will cost around Rs 3 lac. The work will be completed within a month.”

A Haryana-based company was given the contract for the work. The company has assured to finish the work in a month. The company uses heavyweight jacks to lift the house. Five experienced craftsmen of the company are working on the project here. The company also provides bond guarantee for the losses incurred during the process.

This is one of the first such projects to take place in Udupi district.

If successfully accomplished, this raising of a house could be a good feat to protect houses in flood prone areas before they collapse.
