Centre proposes to allow retro fitment of CNG kit in BS-VI vehicles


New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANS): The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has proposed to allow modification via retro fitment of CNG kit and replacement of diesel engines with CNG engines, in case of BS-VI vehicles, less than 3.5 tonnes.

The proposal came vide draft notification dated January 27, 2022.

As of now, retro fitment of CNG and LPG kit is permissible in motor vehicles under the BS-IV emission norms.

The notification lays down the type approval requirements for retro fitment. CNG is an environment friendly fuel and will reduce the emission levels of Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbon, particulate matter and smoke, as compared to petrol and diesel engines.

The proposal has been formulated in consultation with stakeholders, the ministry said in a statement.

Comments and suggestions have been invited from the concerned stakeholders within a period of thirty days, it added.
