Kundapur, Feb 14: Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj took his first sea voyage on February 13, 1665 and sounded victory over Portuguese at Basrur. In memory of the day, fans of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj celebrated ‘Basrur Independence Day’ on Sunday, February 13 at the campus of Sridevi temple of Basrur.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sandeep Raj Mahadev Rao Mahind Pune, chief organizing secretary of Bharaitya Santha Sabha, said, “Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj not only got Basur independent 357 years ago but also put the foundation for Portuguese to leave India on the same day. He strived for the independence of India. It is really appreciable that his bravery is remembered in Basrur for the past nine years. This land has got importance in history.”
Mahila Pramukh of Indian history editing committee Dr Seema Upadhyaya said, “Shivaji, who was in the forefront of independence struggle of India, is not only limited to Maharashtra but great leader who worked hard to provide independence to the nation.”
B Appanna Hegde, Administrative guide of Sri Mahalingeshwara temple, presided over the function. Speaker Chaithra Kundapur, Bajrang Dal taluk convener Sudhir Merdi and others were present.
Before the stage programme a traditional procession was carried out from Mandikeri Holebagilu to Sri Devi temple. Thousands of people participated in the procession.
Umesh Acharya Basrur welcomed the gathering. Sarika Ashok Kumar competed the event. Rakesh G Kelamane rendered vote of thanks.
