Udupi: Four Distinguished Personalities to Receive Annual Awards

Udupi, Dec 31: Academy of General Education, Manipal, Syndicate Bank, and Rotary Club, Udupi-Manipal, have been giving away annual awards to persons with invaluable contributions in the fields of professional life, education, commerce and industry, as well as social service, since 1941. This year, Manipal University has also joined hands in granting of these wards.

The following four persons will receive this year’s annual awards at a function being organized at Valley View Hotel in Manipal on January 1, 2011.

D T Pai: D T Pai, chairman of the newly formed Jnana Jyoti Foundation, is a former chairman and managing director (CMD) of Syndicate Bank. Pai, who is backed by four decades of rich experience in banking field, had worked as executive director of Union Bank of India before becoming the CMD of Syndicate Bank. He had served several fields while discharging duties in different capacities, and extending financial assistance to economically unviable concerns and making them viable again, happens to be one of his great achievements.

Dr Shobha Tandon: Dr Shobha Tandon, a specialist in the field of pedodontics, secured her post graduate degree in dental science through Lukcnow University. She joined Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, after serving as a lecturer in Lucknow government dental college for six years. She has served as professor and head of the department of pedodontics, and as the dean of the college. Dr Tandon is known for her interest in research, and the seminars and workshops she participated, the research essays and research articles which got published in various publications, have made her one of leading doctors in this field. She has won several awards. The pedodontics department started in Manipal Dental College and the post-graduate section started because of the interest she took in it, are regarded as the first of their kind in South India.

Satish Pai: Satish Pai, one of the leaders of the Pai Group in Manipal, joined Manipal Power Press, then being run by his father, T Upendra Pai, and his uncle, Dr Madhava Pai, in 1957. Manipal Group of Companies functioning as sister concerns of Manipal Press, have carved out a niche for themselves in various fields including printing, publication, industrial production, export and other fields.  Satish Pai, who also happens to be the managing director of Manipal Media Network, which publishes Udayavani, Tushara, Roopatara, Taranga and Tunturu, has also contributed to the immense success of Manipal Press to grow as a leader in the field of security printing.  Pai and his publications have so far won several awards.  Pai also discharges responsibilities in a few real estate concerns, service organizations and educational institutions, besides the printing concern.

Dr Manmohan Attavar: Padma Shri Dr Manmohan Attavar is the founder of Bangalore-based ‘Indo Americal Hybrid Seeds’. He has won international recognition through his researches in the field of agriculture. Dr Attavar, who secured his post graduate degree in agriculture from the University of Agriculture Dharwad in 1961, later studied in Madonna University USA, returned to India and set up the above concern. Attavar happens to be the first scientist from the country to have started a concern for production of hybrid seeds for commercial purposes continuously, by using air-conditioning technology.  He has won several awards, is a member of various national and international committees, and has widely travelled through out the globe. He also is known as a generous philanthropist.
