India Asks Gulf Countries to End Sponsorship Regime

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS): India has initiated active diplomatic process with the Gulf countries to get the sponsorship regulations - the main reason behind violations of human rights in the region - abolished, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said Saturday.

"We have signed labour agreements with most of the Gulf countries. They have promised to do away with sponsorship but most of them have not acted yet," Ravi said here at the 9th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, India's annual event to connect with its 25-million-strong diaspora in 130 countries.

He said low-paid workers in the Gulf region are facing problems mainly because of the sponsorship. "Sometimes they just can't do anything. They are on the mercy of sponsors."

The minister said the government has taken initiative to provide legal assistance to the Indian diaspora across the world, especially in the Gulf countries.

"We are providing free legal assistance to the people in the Gulf countries. Our aim is to provide legal assistance for the people across the world," Ravi said.

Can Indian Govt. provide us the Job in India, No. Indian Govt. is thinking its economic condition is strong, but it is due to our renitence to India. May be there are some bad sponsors, but most of them are good ones also. If we want to work in Mumbai we should be at the mercy of Raj or Uddhav Thackrey. Can Indian Govt. think on it. ?

I fully agree with the sponsorship system in the gulf countries must be abolished for one reason it has disadvantages mainly human rights princples. Then Knowingly why Asian country people are coming to the gulf countries when they are not paid well for the job they are doing. It is weakness of the Asian country people and their status is worse in their own countries. No one is forcing them to come to the Gulf. Asian country labourer can get a job of laborer only in Gulf countries and not as a manager. Naturally they are paid very low salaries. We see many Asian county companies are operating business in U.A.E. and they are the one who pays less to Asians. Why? Most of the Indian company managers are exploiting Indian laborers and they should be banned to enter the country here. Their passport must be confiscated to resolve this issue. Indian government can do or pass a law to control this.

Also, there should be minimum wages system for Indians, like Philipinos has. Here in Oman some labourers work for 10 hrs/day for only 55 Rials per month. Coconut peckers at our native are earning more than this!!

Those people who are being engaged
    in building the Gulf countries,
    through their toils in sweat
and blood are mainly from the
    neighbouring countries like
    India, Pakistan, Sri. Lanka,
    Bangaladesh etc.

Some of them live like the slum
dwellers of Mumbai. The extreme hot weather of the summer months
    can drive anybody to mental
asylum. This fate of life can't
    be easily changed.

However, along with the mental torture
being suffered by these people, they have to bear
    another added stress
    under the heavy handed sponsors.

If they have freedom from the
sponsors, that will relieve a lot
of stress in their personal life.
    Both Bahrain and U.A.E. have
    already taken the right steps,
and the rest of the gulf countries
    hopefully will follow the trend,
which can be a greater blessings
    to all the expatriates.

I thnk India should, call back all the low paid workers in the gulf & provide them, with better employment facilities, instead of meddling with their internal affairs.

No gulf country is forcing Indians to go there. Indians themselves even selling everything they own, run to the gulf, paying huge sums to get the visa's. The presentIndia visa price in KSA is in the range of Rs. 1.75 lakhs to Rs 2.25 lakhs.

And who are the culprits, who taught the locals to sell visas for high prices, none other than Indian recruiters.? And who are the people who taught the sponsors to extract Kafala (monthly payments to work freely) from workers.? None other than Indian chamchas of the locals.

And who are those in the management of companies who cut the overtime and other facilities of workers to make money for the sponsors? mostly Indian accountants and Indian Managers.?

In fact workers problems in d gulf started when asian managers (Specially Indian & Pakistani) who took over the US, British and European Managers.

There r many workers from India, in d gulf, who cannot speak a word of the local language, nor Hindi or English, yet they are welcome in the gulf, and earn their livilihood, where as in India, Indians are not welcome to work in other states.

Coming to d situations in India, What about d bonded labour? employment of children. People dieing due to lack of beds in hospitals.? to name a few

Providing legal assistance is fine, but asking to abolish sponsor system, is trespassing

The Sponsorship will come to an end sooner or later. Because the the responsibilities of the Sponsor is neither defined nor defended by the Local Law. The Sponsor is Just a dummy sigatory
and the same job can be done by the government Department and avoid Red Tapism. Ultimately the ex-patriates need to be taken care by the Government and not the sponsor. The time has come so that the every gulf Country should deal with the local population on their own and not on somebody else.
The logic for the investor is to deal directly with the Government and save precious time and as well contribute genuinely with the local economy. Finally the Sponsors should not depend on easy money rather work hard for the country's development. Sponsorship is clear violation of human Rights. Thanks to Vayalar Ravi for his wonderful initiative. God Bless him.

Great Initiative. Sponsorship is a violation of human rights. Equal opportunity rules. Let them tax those employed but let they have the freedom to move from one job to another or negotiate for better salary.
