PM asks IAF to join evacuation operation from Ukraine

New Delhi, Mar 1 (IANS): In order to scale up the ongoing evacuation efforts under 'Operational Ganga', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked the Indian Air Force (IAF) to join the evacuation efforts, sources said here.

"Leveraging the capacities of our Air Force will ensure that more people can be evacuated in a shorter time frame and it will also help deliver humanitarian aid more efficiently," the sources further said.

The Indian Air Force is likely to deploy several C-17 aircrafts as part of Operation Ganga from Tuesday, they added.

Anticipating the enormity of the situation in Ukraine as around 14,000 Indian nationals are still in the war-torn country, the government officials said that the IAF is ready with an evacuation plan.

The inclusion of IAF transport aircraft to carry out the evacuation efforts was necessary because thousands of Indians are stuck in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa.

The External Affairs Ministry on Tuesday advised all Indian nationals to leave Ukraine's capital as soon as possible as the situation in Kyiv was getting worse day by day by the attacks of the Russian Army, the officials, who are aware of the developments, said.

IAF transport aircraft like C-17 Globemaster has a large carrying capacity and a big number of evacuees can be ferried from the neighbouring countries of the Ukraine in comparison with civil airlines, they further said, adding that the IAF pilots are trained to fly safely in war-like situations.

Prime Minister Modi is personally monitoring the evacuation mission and he has chaired three high-level meetings till Monday evening.

Till now, over 1600 Indian students have been evacuated from the Ukraine till this morning as the seventh Air India Express flight landed in Mumbai with 182 Indians, mostly students, who departed from Budapest (Hungary) at midnight Monday.

During the high-level meeting held on Monday evening, PM Modi has directed the Ministry of External Affairs officials to make proper arrangements for the students who will be coming to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania till they depart for India.

The four senior Cabinet Ministers, who have been designated as Prime Minister's 'Special Envoy' are departing to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania to oversee the evacuation mission. The visit of four senior ministers to these nations will energise the evacuation efforts. Modi has already talked to the Prime Ministers of Romania and Slovakia for support in evacuating Indians through their countries.

"The Indian Air Force is likely to deploy several C-17 aircrafts as part of Operation Ganga from Tuesday, they added."............It is sad to note that so far only show was made. Instead of keeping the air force aircrafts in the hanger and keeping the air force piolets without much work, use them at least in such situations.

India is doing an excellent evacuation service of air lifting our citizens still stuck in Ukraine. This is a new generation war and since Ukraine civil airports are shut down due to Russian strikes, the idea of evacuation from 4 neighbouring countries is very unique and what stands out is that Modi has sent his 4 senior Cabinet Ministers to oversee operations. Jai Bharat Matha!

One Indian student already lost life and you are talking about the uniqueness of sending 4 ministers.... You are talking about the uniqueness as if they have gone to the war torn country.....they have gone to the neighboring countries and just meeting the students in the flight..... New Age wars demand new age rescue efforts and not propaganda..... But the ground reality is that not a single embassy vehicle is used to transport Indians safely to the borders..... People are being asked by embassy to reach the borders and once they reached there no embassy official is present and they are subjecting to caning by Ukranian forces.... People are burning excess clothes to save them from freezing cold.....Entire risk of travelling in the war torn country is borne by the people themselves without any guidance from the embassy....and at the end providing aircraft to reach the country is the big thing you are talking about..... It is because of many Good Samaritans like Sister Ligy, Mother Superior of Mukachevo convent near Polish border who provided food and shelter to all Indians, many of them are still safe and not because of Indian embassy efforts..... Manassilayo Mone ???

30 Years back, Indian Government airlifted people from Kuwait under full-fledged war situations and the number of people evacuated were nearly 2 lacs and all these happened silently without any propaganda. Here the present leadership will sleep over the matter till it gets worse and then send the aircrafts under some nationalistic names such as 'Vande Bharath', 'Operation Ganga' etc., MPs will line up at airport for photographic session and then the entire matter will used to promote a political cause. I am at a loss to understand what 'Ganga' has to do with the Ukraine evacuation for naming the operation as 'Operation Ganga'..... Ideally cleaning up of river Ganga of the dead bodies dumped during pandemic should have been named so..... We have a PM who is a narcissist to the core; who will stoop to any level for boosting self image.

Naresh...you are absolutely right. Now the current goverment can't even evacuate thousands. Luckily during Kuwait war we did not have Modi as PM. Now ministers are going to oversee evacuation. What is the need? This is nothing but just a publicity. Visit of ministers may even spoil the program of evacuating.

They are realizing the real effect of privatization of the "Air India and Indian Airlines". And now even people have started realizing it.
